Calumet County Attractions

Calumet County is truly "a little piece of heaven." It is ideally located between Lake Winnebago and Lake Michigan and boasts several parks on the shores of Lake Winnebago. Deriving its name from a Menominee Indian Village lying on the east shore of Lake Winnebago, Calumet means "peace." Its name, which signifies the Indian Pipe of Peace, is symbolized in the slogan known to have been used by a county newspaper editor nearly a century ago - "We Extend the Calumet to All Mankind." Smoke from the peace pipes of resident Menominees ascended to the Great Spirit from within the peaceful border of the County before the coming of the White Man. Traces of prehistoric mound builders exist as evidence of these earlier settlements.

From the crest of the ledge, which parallels Lake Winnebago, the shoreline and the lake beyond spread in a wondrous natural panorama. Trees still border the lake as they did in the days of the Menominees, concealing from a distance the modern cottages along the shoreline. Where the smoke from Indian campfires arose in the dim and distant past, today you can see smoke from the stacks of the homes and businesses on the distant Winnebago Shore.

Calumet County provides plenty of opportunity for all kinds of outdoor activities. Trails open year round provide great hiking and sightseeing, and in the winter are open for fantastic cross-county skiing. Fishing and hunting are popular activities. Open water and ice fishing are available at area lakes. Hunters have access to waterfowl, as well as upland game and deer in the Brillion Marsh. Back to top

Open from dusk to dawn, the Ledge View Nature Center offers exploration of 3 caves and hosts Wisconsin's largest fossil collection.

The Brillion Nature Center
Brillion
The Brillion Nature Center features trails and a picnic area. Trails are open to cross country skiing in the winter. The Conservation Club offers trap, archery, snowmobile trails and cross country skiing. They also offer a club house for public use as well as club functions. Brillion is a short distance from the Calumet County Park System.

High Cliff State Park and point Beach State Park are a short distance away. Open water and ice fishing are available at area lakes within 3 miles of the City. Hunters have access to waterfowl, as well as upland game and deer in the Brillion Marsh. Back to top
