Set along the banks of the Lemonweir River, Mauston is a small picturesque Midwest community featuring all the advantages of small town life, surrounded by a variety of  beautiful landscape. But Mauston is also a very progressive community with five of its many businesses ranking in  the Fortune 500!

Year Round Outdoor Attractions

The Mauston area, which features spectacular scenery and a variety of landscape, is full of recreational opportunities. There are breathtaking bluffs, including Target Bluff, Mill Bluff and Mile Bluff and the second and fourth largest lakes in Wisconsin are close by.  The Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes offer all kinds of recreational opportunities to thousands of residents and visitors each year. Three major recreation trails, including the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail, the Omaha Trail  and the 400 State Bike Trail provide hundreds of miles of groomed trail for hiking, biking, and sightseeing. Some  areas of these trails are groomed for horseback riding, ATV's and in winter for great cross-country skiing. Mauston is near the site of American Indian effigies and several wildlife viewing areas, such as the Sprague Mather Flowage, Eagle's Nest and the Necedah Wildlife Refuge, a national wildlife preserve. The Lemonweir River provides canoeists with a challenging adventure and includes camp grounds, rest stops and picnic areas along the way. Other area rivers are more easy flowing for the canoe novice. 

The woods and waters around Mauston host a great variety of birds and animals, perfect for the avid nature lover, angler and hunter. The area boasts an abundance of wildlife, including a variety of rare and endangered plants and animals.  Here you'll find the world's largest population of the endangered Karner blue butterfly, gray wolves, blanding turtles, and the Massasauga rattlesnake. There is also the largest concentration of whitetail deer in the Midwest, as well as black bears, raccoons, squirrels, ruffed grouse, pheasants and sandhill cranes. Birdlife includes bald eagles, hawks, grouse, turkeys, songbirds, herons, egrets, and thousands of migrating waterfowl.  Lakes, rivers and streams are alive with brown, brook and rainbow trout, bass, panfish, walleye, northern, catfish and muskie. Castle Rock State Park, and many other local and state parks, provide camping, swimming, picnicking and plenty of scenic attractions for everyone to enjoy.

Historical Attractions

Mauston is rich in history and has preserved its past in  the Juneau County Historical Society Museum. Composed of four buildings, the Boorman House, is the main attraction. Built in 1874, the Boorman House is a beautifully appointed 13-room Victorian mansion. Various open houses with special entertainment are held here throughout the year.

The area's history is also reflected in numerous collectible, specialty, craft and antique shops, which carry artifacts reflecting the Indian heritage of the area. The adventurous shopper can find many wonderful treasures, such as Woodland Indian cultural artifacts, ancient arrowheads,19th century fishing lures, pioneer farming implements, turn of the century furniture, porcelain and enameled household goods, as well as art and clothing.
